The Science of Reading is the name we use for many years of RESEARCH that helps us understand HOW children learn to read and what teaching methods work best.
It is NOT a program or a curriculum. It is RESEARCH that guides how reading is taught.
Reading Is Learned – Not Automatic
Children learn to talk naturally by listening and speaking. Reading is different.
The brain must be taught how to hear sounds in words, connect sounds to letters, blend sounds to read words, read smoothly, and understand meaning.
The Science of Reading shows that reading is a skill that must be taught—and with the right teaching, nearly every child can succeed.
What Strong Reading Instruction Includes:
Phonemic Awareness
Hearing and working with sounds in words
Phonics
Learning how letters represent sounds
Fluency
Reading smoothly and accurately
Vocabulary
Learning word meanings
Comprehension
Understanding what is read
