Data & Feel. Use Both When Making Your College Choices

As we move into the second week of April, many high school seniors are approaching one of the most important decisions in their college journey: where to enroll this fall. With most institutions requiring enrollment deposits by May 1, students and families are carefully weighing their options and making final choices.

For many, this decision comes down to a combination of academic fit, campus environment, and—critically—financial affordability. Comparing financial aid packages and understanding long-term outcomes can feel overwhelming, especially for families navigating this process for the first time.

One valuable resource we encourage families to explore is College Scorecard, a free tool provided by the U.S. Department of Education. This platform allows students and families to compare colleges across key metrics, including:

  • Graduation rates
  • Average cost by income level
  • Financial aid and debt levels
  • Post-graduation earnings

Access to this kind of transparent, data-driven information can be incredibly helpful when evaluating multiple college options side by side. It empowers families to make informed decisions grounded in real outcomes.

At the same time, it’s important to recognize the limits of any data tool. Numbers alone cannot capture the full college experience. A campus visit—whether in person or virtual—offers something equally important: a sense of belonging.

Students should ask themselves: Can I see myself here?

Do I feel comfortable, supported, and excited about this environment?

The strongest decisions are made when data and personal fit work together. Tools like the College Scorecard can provide critical insight into value and outcomes, while campus experiences help students determine where they will thrive academically, socially, and personally.

As you approach May 1, we encourage families to use both—objective information and personal intuition—to guide this important choice
