Summer is almost here! Here’s a collection of summer programs available to Springfield students.

Mattenberg Summer STEAM @ UMass

Offered at UMass Amherst, the Massenberg STEM Institute is a two-week summer program designed to engage and excite rising 10th grade students about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Ocean STEAM @ Woods Hole

For students interested in marine biology. Fellows stay on the Sea Education Association campus with convenient access to nearby WHOI facilities while participating in an immersive learning experience. Throughout the week, they collaborate with WHOI staff, researchers, and STEAM professionals to explore ocean research, learn about marine careers, and engage in hands-on activities. The program is designed to build meaningful connections with scientists, educators, and peers while deepening participants’ understanding of the field.

Judicial Summer Program

The Judicial Youth Corps (JYC) Program is an intensive educational summer internship that teaches high school students about the Massachusetts court system and rule of law. Students are taught and mentored by judges, lawyers, clerks, probation officers and other court personnel who volunteer their time in educational sessions or as supervisors. Students participate in a mock trial, field trips, group discussions, and much more. The JYC program, run out of the Supreme Judicial Court’s Public Information Office, offers the summer session. Students who are accepted into the program must attend the entire six-week session. Students are paid.

Smith Science & Engineering Program

The Smith Summer Science and Engineering Program (SSEP) is designed for exceptional high school students with strong interests in science and engineering. Engage in lab-based courses with Smith faculty in life and physical sciences and in engineering. Financial Aid & Scholarship Available.

The Common Young Writer Program @ Amherst College

The Common Young Writers Program welcomes high school students passionate about creative writing to join us for a two week intensive on the craft of fiction. This virtual course includes daily synchronous and asynchronous work for students excited to learn the building blocks of fiction (scene, character, plot, image) and write and revise their own stories in a short period of time. Students will learn to read like a writer, by closely examining short stories published in The Common, and engage with their peers. By the end of this jam-packed program, students will emerge with original pieces of writing, more confident in their skills and connected to a supportive writing community.

UMASS Amherst Turing

Free for entering 10th and 11th graders, the Turing Summer Program is a three-week summer program for students interested in learning about Computer Science in a state-of-the art university setup at the Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences at UMass Amherst. Students will experience how computing can address challenges in healthcare, security, design, energy and sustainability, and many other areas. Learn about the latest technologies such as AI, Cloud Computing, 3D printing, Robotics and much more from faculty and researchers from the Manning CICS. This is a commuter program.

Girls Who Code PATHWAYS

Learn coding online. Open to girls and nonbinary high school students, PATHWAYS is a free seven-week online program for students to learning coding at their own pace. Participants will e able to explore coursework in five tracks: Data Science + AI, Game design, Web Development, Cybersecurity and AI + Society.

For: 9th-12th graders and graduating seniors

Great Books Summer Program @ Amherst College

Writer’s Workshop is a welcoming program for both beginner and advanced young writers, offering instruction from accomplished authors in a supportive, creative community. Through seminars, creative prompts, and structured writing time, students develop key skills such as voice, style, and point of view while building a strong portfolio. Mentorship from program assistants further enriches the experience, helping students refine their craft and grow as confident writers. Not free, but financial aid available.

Introduction to Public Heath Careers @ UMASS Springfield

A chance for middle and high school students to learn about public health careers and opportunities available at the UMass School of Public Health. Held at the Springfield campus of UMass in downtown Springfield.
