About Hope for Youth and Families

Hope for Youth and Families is a nonprofit organization committed to supporting young people and families through educational, enrichment, and community-based programming. We partner with schools and other community organizations to provide students with the support, skills, and opportunities they need to succeed.

Hope for Youth and Families is seeking a dedicated and experienced Massachusetts-licensed teacher to serve as a Reading Intervention Teacher at a partner school in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Position Overview

The Reading Intervention Teacher will provide targeted reading instruction and support to students while working collaboratively with English and Humanities teachers, school staff, and a college intern. The ideal candidate will have classroom teaching experience, a strong background in reading instruction, and knowledge of the Science of Reading and evidence-based literacy practices.

This position is ideal for an educator who is passionate about helping students develop foundational and advanced reading skills, improve literacy outcomes, and build confidence as readers and learners.

The Reading Intervention Teacher will work approximately 30 hours per week during the 2026–2027 school year. There is an optional 10 hours per week to teach reading and/or creative writing in our afterschool program.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide targeted, small-group and/or individualized reading instruction based on student needs.
• Assess student reading skills and use assessment data to inform instruction and intervention.
• Implement evidence-based literacy instruction aligned with the principles of the Science of Reading.
• Support students in developing skills in areas such as:
  • Phonological and phonemic awareness, when appropriate
  • Phonics and word recognition
  • Fluency
  • Vocabulary
  • Reading comprehension
  • Background knowledge and language development
• Collaborate regularly with English and Humanities teachers to align reading intervention with classroom instruction and student needs.
• Support the development and implementation of individualized instructional goals for students.
• Monitor student progress and maintain accurate records of student participation, instructional goals, and growth.
• Communicate regularly with school and program staff regarding student progress and instructional needs.
• Collaborate with and provide guidance to a college intern supporting literacy instruction and student learning.
• Create a positive, supportive, and inclusive learning environment that encourages students to take academic risks and build confidence.
• Participate in relevant staff meetings, professional development, and program planning.
• Maintain professional relationships with students, families, school personnel, nonprofit staff, and community partners.
• Perform other related responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• In Progress to getting a Massachusetts teaching license in an appropriate area, such as English Language Arts, Reading, Moderate Disabilities, or another relevant licensure area.
• Experience teaching reading, literacy, English Language Arts, or providing reading intervention.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the Science of Reading and evidence-based reading instruction.
• Experience working with middle school and/or high school students.
• Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team.
• Commitment to supporting students with diverse learning needs, backgrounds, and experiences.
• Ability to work approximately 30 hours per week for the program period.

 

Preferred Qualifications

• Massachusetts teaching license in an appropriate area, such as English Language Arts, Reading, Moderate Disabilities, or another relevant licensure area.
• Experience providing structured literacy or reading intervention.
• Experience using student data and assessment information to inform instruction.
• Training or experience in evidence-based literacy programs and instructional approaches.
• Experience working with students who have reading difficulties or significant gaps in literacy skills.
• Experience collaborating with English, Humanities, special education, or intervention teachers.
• Experience mentoring or supervising college students, interns, tutors, or paraprofessionals.
• Knowledge of adolescent literacy development.
• Experience working in an urban school or community-based educational setting.
• Familiarity with progress monitoring and literacy assessment tools.

Compensation and Schedule

Compensation: $42,000–$60,000 for the program period, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Schedule: Approximately 30 hours per week.

Optional: Approximately 10 hours per week supporting Creative Writing or Literacy Afterschool Program – Salary will increase $14,000, if this is added.

Anticipated Employment Period: August 17, 2026 – June 30, 2027.

The position’s 30-40-hour workweek is expected to include direct student instruction, instructional planning and preparation, collaboration with English and Humanities teachers, student assessment and progress monitoring, meetings, and collaboration with the college intern.
